Turlock, CA- To increase the number of family practice physicians available to families in Turlock, Emanuel Family Practice and Specialty Associates has added a new doctor, Shamiran Badal, MD.
For Dr. Badal, treating a variety of patients is refreshing.
"Family practice, for me, is the way to practice medicine because you deal with a variety of patients - women, men, young and old. When I see older people and then have a young patient, it's refreshing."
Dr. Badal completed her three-year family practice residency training in 2010 at Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago. Dr. Badal also did residency and post-graduate training in preventive medicine at the University of Damascus in her native country, Syria. She earned her medical degree in 1998 from the University of Aleppo Medical School in Syria, and speaks Arabic and English.
With a strong interest in preventive medicine, Dr. Badal is pleased that it is a becoming more widespread in this country.
"Doctors are looking at doing more preventive teaching to their patients rather than just treatment," she said. "But just talking to patients about preventing disease is not enough. We need to expand this in such areas as smoking and alcohol cessation and obesity. We should start from a prevention point rather than a treatment point. I have to discuss these things with my patients because I care for them."
And while she appreciates Turlock's weather compared to Chicago's, she had a hard time leaving her patients at Swedish Covenant.
"I like to create long-term relationships," she said. "After three years of residency, it was hard to leave my patients. They wanted to know where I was going so they could follow me. There's a street in Chicago called California and they thought I was going to an office there!"
Dr. Badal's office is located at 2121 Colorado Ave., Suite C in Turlock. She can be reached at (209) 664-5175.
