Success! A United Emanuel Community Reaches $1 Million Goal

Turlock, CA- With the combined efforts of community volunteers, hospital employees and a supportive and generous community, Emanuel Medical Center reached its $1 million fundraising goal to support advanced cardiovascular services in Turlock.

The results were joyful and thankful news for everyone involved, including Bill Gibbs, the community fund drive chair.

"There was something special about this year's fund drive," he said. "We're in the worst economy that most of us can remember, yet many people gave more this year or were new donors. It brought tears to my eyes."

Many donors were inspired by Turlock couple Jeani and John Ferrari, who pledged to contribute an additional $500,000 if the community and employees raised $1 million. On Thursday, when the latest round of pledges brought the total up to $1,003,126 the Ferraris celebrated, too.

"John and I are proud of all of you and humbled by your accomplishments," Jeani Ferrari said. "What you have accomplished in just six weeks is amazing."

"We were all in this together," said John Ferrari.  "Whether you gave $25, $250 or $25,000, every single dollar contributed to our common goal. Jeani and I are so thankful for every one of you."

Shirley Pok, the hospital vice president of development, credits the Ferraris for helping the hospital reach its goal so quickly.

"Jeani and John Ferrari love and support this community so that quality of life and quality healthcare are available to everyone," she said. "Their commitment and generosity truly inspired community and employee giving."

Money raised during the six-week campaign, called Legacy Circle, will be used to expand advanced cardiovascular services at the hospital so no one with a heart-related medical need will have to be taken out of town for treatment. Building that program began with the opening of the Cardiac Cath & Interventional Lab in April, and will expand with an upgraded cardiac operating room that will allow open-heart surgery to begin next spring.

In late 2012, two state-of-the-art cardiac operating suites are scheduled to open, and the final vision for the project is to develop a dedicated space consolidating all of Emanuel's cardiovascular services. Legacy Circle volunteers and donors are supporting the program by committing to raise $1 million a year for five straight years.

"In just six weeks, our devoted community volunteers raised $687,573," said Jana Rhine, director of annual giving.  "During the same period, our extraordinary employees brought in $315,552. This is the highest amount ever raised by our employees in the 10-year history of Legacy Circle."

"It's just awesome," said Terrie King, the employee fund drive chair. "We are so proud of our employees. Their hearts are in the right place and their giving was better than ever."
Emanuel President and CEO John Sigsbury said among the many motivational fund drive leaders of the campaign was Dr. Harold Tabaie, Emanuel's medical director of cardiothoracic and vascular surgery.

"Dr. Tabaie has been our physician champion from the beginning.  He is leading Emanuel's initiative to bring the best cardiac care to our community and educating and motivating our fund drive volunteers along the way," he said.

"Tonight's results show how strongly our fund drive volunteers and donors embrace our plan for advanced cardiovascular services. I am in awe of their accomplishments and blessed to be part of this community and its medical center."

Although the six-week campaign is over, people can still donate to Legacy Circle. To donate, call 209-664-5180 or visit
