Child Hospitalist Program
The Pediatric Hospitalist Program at Emanuel Medical Center ensures that our youngest patients have a dedicated pediatric specialist available to them 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Our pediatric hospitalists attend complicated births, care for infants in the nursery, and treat child-aged patients in the Intensive Care Unit and regular pediatric unit.
What is a Hospitalist?
A hospitalist is a dedicated physician who specializes in treating patients in a hospital setting. Pediatric hospitalists are double specialists, specially trained in treating children, and in treating hospitalized patients. The pediatric hospitalists at Emanuel are affiliated with Children's Hospital Central California in Madera.
What are the benefits of care from a Hospitalist?
Because hospitalists specialize in hospital medicine, studies have found that patients treated by hospitalists do better than hospitalized patients treated by their regular doctors. Hospitalists are familiar with the hospital staff and specialist physicians, as well as with the hospital's policies and procedures. This ensures that the highest quality of care is provided to each patient.
How does the program work?
During your child's stay at Emanuel, he or she will receive most of their care from one hospitalist who will make bedside visits, provide treatment and communicate with your child's regular doctor and other Emanuel specialists as needed.
What happens when my child goes home?
When your child is discharged, your hospitalist will review and summarize your treatment with your child's pediatrician to ensure there is seamless continuity of care. If you do not have a regular pediatrician for your child, your hospitalist and the Emanuel discharge planner will refer you to a local clinic for follow up care and coordinate treatment with that clinic.
